Tea with my grandparents

As I reflect on the past I remember the fond moments shared with my grandparents. The little chats about life and future and some funny moments with my granddad when he use to perform spontaneous magic tricks on the balcony of their home in Overport Durban.

Now as I, in particular, take a moment break from work, sipping on a hot cup of five rose tea, I began to reminisce the days when I use to visit my grandparents. So fragile and carm with warm hugs and smiles. There is nothing better than paying a visit to my grandparents.

As I step into home that shared so many memories, the kettle switch went on and the crackling noise of the biscuit packet been open. So happy to see me and the rest of the family members. Any sort of spoils that could be given at that moment was so precious. The tea was brought to the lounge table and the sweet conversations use to begin, simple catch-ups were all that made my grandparent's hearts happy. Seeing our faces knowing that we were ok... Is what was most important to them. Growing up with a strict upbringing they knew non of the grandchildren would get up to mischief.

You know by the wonderful hospitality received every time a visit was made, it was like both my grandparents would wait for my arrival again. O... How I miss my lovely grandparents.  Especially on the Sunday drives.

My grandmom, was soo sweet, shame... whenever I had visited her, she will always place a little gift in my hand, be it money, a bowl, a towel, or just sweets. You know you at grandmoms when you never leave empty-handed.

Something I really enjoyed was a vegetarian biryani, yummy I can still taste her hand cooking, she made the tastiest Indian style biryani and I was so lucky my grandmom uses to prepare it just for me, cause I was the only vegetarian in the family and use to get spoilt so often by her.

I was referred to as "my Shemara". I can still remember the calling of my name and the way in which it was said with so much love.

Grandparents will always play a special role in our hearts, and today as I take a moment to reflect I have kind and loving memories of them both.....( My Nani and Nana)

We grow older every day and what we have learned from our grandparents plays such an important factor in our lives today. It was like they have prepared us for the years ahead of our future. A couple of the things that were shared or thought:

  • Always do the right thing no matter how hard life gets
  • Pray always before you leave the house
  • 2 wrong don't make a right
  • Learn from your mistakes
  • Always stand for yourself

My granddad was confined to the bed, strange enough he had never seen me drive but had told me not to drive fast... ( I was a very fast driver).  Lol he was not a magician for nothing... I did listen and started to drive at a slower speed than usual.

As much as our parents play the most important role in our lives, it's our grandparents that add so much more value to us as well. I am so proud to have had such loving grandparents the little they had to offer is what they offered with so much love and gratitude.

So life goes on and until I meet my grandparents again. Treasure your grandparents if they still around. Opportunities come very rare to have a cup of tea with them or just a simple visit, make the most of their time while they still here with you.

Life is too short to have regrets...
